There is a tragic yet powerful description in Scripture of what happens when those who oppose truth gain ascendancy in the world. The scope of this evil as described in this passage goes far beyond this world, however. Daniel 8:10 says that "it grew until it reached the host of the heavens, and it threw some of the starry host down to the earth and trampled on them."

We do not live our lives here on earth in a vacuum. They are intertwined and connected with what takes place in the invisible spiritual realm. Truth is basic to both of these realms, and what happens in one realm affects the other.

Notice that in this passage it describes the opposer to God as throwing down some of the starry hosts to the ground. Later, in verse 12, it says that "truth was thrown to the ground."

Those words sadden me every time I read them, for, as I said, I love the truth and have the highest regard for it. It sorrows me greatly to see a world that not only ignores truth or turns away from it but actually has disdain for the truth. It treats this precious gift from God, truth, as something so little to be valued that it throws it to the ground. That picture causes me to weep inside every time I read it.

Whenever somebody tells the world the truth of God, it turns on this speaker and ridicules that person or tries to silence them, killing them if necessary to do it. Nevertheless, those who love the truth will not let even the threat of death stop them. To love the truth is to love God, and to love God and to know his love is worth the price even of death.

Scripture for today: Rev. 12:11
Thought for today: Some things are worth dying for. Some things are worth living for. God is worthy of both.
Prayer for today: Lord God, forgive me for settling to live and die for lesser things than you.
