When Paul begins his address to the Corinthians in chapter two of his first letter to them, he says:
"When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God" (v.1).
Right here, we have the standard for how we must come to know God. It is not through superior wisdom of human intellect. This can indeed sound very eloquent to the human mind, but why should we be surprised at that? The sinful human nature is, by nature, just that: sinful -- and pride in what it can accomplish on its own is part of that pride.
But God will have none of that. He makes himself known to us not by the efforts of our own reasoning but simply by revealing himself to us in his Word. He is so far above the capability of the human mind even to conceive of his true nature, much less to understand it, that he challenges the best the world has to offer to do so:
"Where is the wise man? where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? (1 Cor. 1:20).
He has indeed, and anyone who has come to know God through the only way he can be known, the work of the Holy Spirit in drawing that person to Jesus Christ, can perceive the foolishness of trying to approach God in any other way, including that of the human mind.
There is only one way to God. His name is Jesus.
Scripture for today: John 14:6
Thought for today: I cannot come to know God through my own strength or reasoning, but only through the one way he has provided for me to know him: through his Son, Jesus Christ.
Prayer for today: Jesus, I accept you as the one and only way to know God. Thank you for making Him known to me.
