Now, the thought of trying to explore the profound nature of the Holy Spirit and his work throughout all of reality is a very intimidating prospect. But to help us understand this, Paul begins by comparing this area which we do not know with something we do know. He compares it to the working of our own spirit within our own being.
"For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man's spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God" (1 Cor. 2:11).
So we need have no misconception about the possibility or impossibility of there being a way to know the deepest depths of God. Scripture here informs us that it is indeed possible, and the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit is this way.
So, if we would know God at the deepest level possible, it is clear from God's own revelation of himself in his Word, that we need the Holy Spirit. As has been said so often previously, we can never hope to fathom the depths of the unfathomable God by the use of unaided human reasoning. That is the approach of the world's religions and philosophies. And we have already seen that this approach is doomed to failure. We must rely upon the Holy Spirit to reveal what we cannot discern on our own.
Scripture for today: 1 Cor. 2:11
Thought for today: The Holy Spirit knows everything there is to know about God, for He is God's own Spirit.
Prayer for today: Holy Spirit, I praise you and worship you as God.
