It is not enough to come to know God through his Son Jesus Christ. The passage we have been studying in Deuteronomy says that not only must we know him, we must cling to him, hold fast to him.
It is very easy in this temporary world to live a temporary life. It is no coincidence that this world has a high divorce rate. When a society views everything as temporary, marriage suffers the same fate as the newest craze: If it no longer brings one comfort or pleasure, get rid of it and get a newer model.
But that is not how God wants us to view life. Life is an eternal gift from God and we are to view it that way. But since in our human sinfulness, we do not naturally view anything as permanent, God seeks to establish a covenant with us, to remind us that some things go beyond our temporary desires for pleasure.
We have free will. God wants to enter into a covenant with us but we must do so freely. To agree to the covenant brings life; to refuse brings death. For in the covenant, we have the Lord, and "the Lord is your life" (v. 20).
Scripture for today: Dt. 30:19, 20
Thought for today: The Lord is my life.
Prayer for today: Thank you, Lord, for giving me life and for being my life.
