In the middle of the night, the loved girl hears her lover approach where she lives. Instantly alert to the sound of his voice, her heart races in joy at the sound of his coming.

"Listen! My lover is knocking" (Song of Songs 5:2).

This is a beautiful picture of Christ coming to each one who cries out to be loved. In a world full of people desperate to find one person who will truly love them and not just seek them out to satisfy their own need for love and then leave them when they no longer are satisfied by the relationship thus founded, Jesus comes to them, knocking on the door of their heart. The one they have been seeking all their life, to give them the love they so desperately desire, has come to give that deep desire of their heart to them.

"Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and and he with me" (Rev. 3:20).

Or in the words of Song of Songs: "Open to me, my sister, my darling, my dove, my flawless one" (5:2).

How like the perfect love of our Lord for us that the One who comes to woo us into his love is the very One who makes us flawless in his sight, worthy to receive his love.

Scripture for today: Song of Songs 5:2; Rev. 3:20
Thought for today: Jesus is both the both the great Lover of my soul and the One who makes that soul worthy of his love.
Prayer for today: I hearken to your voice, Lord Jesus, and respond in love to your call to love you.
