Even when offered light so that we can see reality, we have within ourselves the power to refuse to accept this light. We do not have to see if we do not want to.
Do you want to see reality? The question may seem to have an obvious answer. "Of course I want to see things the way they really are!" you might reply. But the truth is, many people do not want to see reality. For the reality is that we are, by nature, evil (Luke 11:13) -- and not everyone wants to admit that.
Jesus once encountered a blind man by the side of the road and invited him to come to him. It was obvious to Jesus and everyone else that this beggar was blind, and yet Jesus asked him what would seem like an unnecessary question. Jesus asked him what he wanted him to do for him (Mark 10:51).
By this time, Jesus was known far and wide as one who could perform miracles, including restoring sight to the blind. The blind man knew this, and Jesus knew that he knew this. Wouldn't it be obvious what he wanted Jesus to do? Yet he still asked this blind man what he wanted. Why?
On another occasion, Jesus came across a man who had been sick for a long time, 38 years -- another case where it would seem very obvious what the person would want: to be healed. Again, Jesus knew this, yet, again, he asks a question the answer to which would seem obvious. Jesus asked him if he would you like to get well (John 5:6).
The truth is, not everyone does want to get well -- if it means having to face up to the reality about their own evil nature. They would rather remain sick or in darkness than see the light. So Jesus asks the question: Do you want to see?
Scripture for today: John 3:19-21; John 5:6
Thought for today: I must want to know reality to receive its blessings.
Prayer for today: Jesus, thank you for showing me the reality of your great love for me.
