The world has many ways to try to penetrate the darkness of the human soul: psychology, education, psychiatry, drugs, religion. But man does not understand the true nature of his own darkness, and therefore none of these can do more than shed some limited light upon that darkness, for the darkness that resides in the heart of sinful human beings is too deep for anything from man to affect it.
Sin is such a terrible darkener of the human spirit that only the One who created each human being's spirit can release that spirit from the darkness that surrounds it. God sent his Son to save the world from its darkness. God sent his Son to break the chains of darkness that bind human beings to the ways of darkness.
"He brought them out of darkness and the deepest gloom and broke away their chains" (Psalm 107:14).
If only we could see how this Scripture which refers back to the ancient exodus from literal slavery in Egypt applies equally well to the spiritual chains that enslave every human being of all every age. When we see this glorious truth, then we must also sing with the psalmist, his words which immediately follow that verse:
"Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men, for he breaks down gates of bronze and cuts through bars of iron" (vs. 15, 16).
Scripture for today: Psalm 107:14-16
Thought for today: God brings us out of the darkness of this world.
Prayer for today: Thank you, Lord, for delivering us.
