In the earlier part of Isaiah 28, the section quoted previously that used the parable of the farmer sowing seed, there is also a section where God warns those who think they can flaunt God's rules and ways and still escape his judgment.

After hearing God's servants, the prophets, warn them that judgment is coming, these people mocked them and their message, trusting in their own devices to protect them from the military attacks and other judgments God had decreed upon them for their defiance of him. They thought that they would be immune from the danger that was coming. They boasted:

"We have entered into a covenant with death, with the grave we have an agreement. When an overwhelming scourge sweeps by, it cannot touch us, for we have made a lie our refuge and falsehood our hiding place" (Isaiah 28:15).

Is this any different from America's reliance upon its great military might? This country drowns in moral filth, and all the while thinks that it will escape the judgment of God. It will not. It will suffer heavily. God's reply of warning to his people of Isaiah's time is just as relevant for people of any time whose society matches the sin of that bygone age:

"'Although they have come out of the fire, the fire will yet consume them. . . . I will make the land desolate because they have been unfaithful,' declares the Lord." (Ezekiel 15:7, 8).

Scripture for today: Isaiah 28
Thought for today: None escapes the judgment of God.
Prayer for today: Lord, keep me ever mindful of your judgment.
