It was noted previously in these devotions that God desires to make a covenant with the people he has created. He wants us to enter into an agreement with him to be his people and for him to be our God.

But, instead, the world has sought after its own gods in their idols, and have made their own covenants with those false gods. In doing this, these people of the world's religions think that they have secured for themselves protection from death. These false religions of the world have their own versions of heaven after death.

But in Isaiah 28, God says that he will annul these covenants; they will not be able to stand up to his awful judgment on the coming day. God declares that those who trust in religious teachings contrary to those of his Word will find out on that day which covenant is stronger and able to withstand the fire of that day.

Then this passage from Isaiah goes on to say that the understanding of this message from God will bring not only terror but sheer terror to those who have trusted in the false gods and made covenants with them. For the day of truth will come and Isaiah proclaims that in that day God will rise up to perform what Isaiah describes as his strange work and alien task.

What is it that God will do on his day of judgment that is so strange and alien to us? He will judge the false gods that dared to set themselves up as gods to the people.

"Tell them this: 'These gods, who did not make the heavens and the earth, will perish from the earth and from under the heavens'" (Jer. 10:11).

Scripture for today: Isaiah 28
Thought for today: Even the so-called gods shall be judged by the one true God.
Prayer for today: Lord, remind me continually of the tremendous scope of your judgment.
