After giving much warning about the coming judgment of God, Isaiah 28 then gives a warning that flows naturally from the God who warns out of love:
"Now stop your mocking, or your chains will become heavier" (v. 22).
This warning is not solely for those who heard it in the time of Isaiah when it was issued. It is one of the wonders of Scripture that very often what it says has at least two applications: for the immediate hearers of the day in which it was issued, and for those who would hear it long afterward. The spiritual truths of Scripture are eternal truths.
The eternal truth that is active in this section of Isaiah 28 is that God is not mocked -- the same truth stated more directly, in those very words and centuries later, in Galatians 6:7.
But that New Testament verse also includes reference to another aspect of this truth, for its opening words are that we should not be deceived. The false god of this world is often called the deceiver in Scripture, and one of his chief deceptions upon this world is that God can be mocked and this mockery can be gotten away with. This is a lie from the father of lies.
May the God of all truth protect us from this lie.
Scripture for today: Isaiah 28:22; Galatians 6:7
Thought for today: God is not mocked.
Prayer for today: Holy God, I do not mock you but bow myself down before you as the only God.
