We have just seen that it is impossible for a human being to exist without God. That many wicked people do exist in our world is possible only because God is here in this world, despite the wickedness that also exists. And God showers his blessings upon the wicked as well, or else how would we who have been saved ever have been saved? God sends his rain of blessings upon the wicked and the righteous (Mt. 5:45).
But it will not always be so. The unrighteous will not forever enjoy the blessings of God as they do in this world. Hell is real, and it is the natural consequence for living apart from God. For those who choose to live apart from God in this world, that choice continues to prevail in the next world as well.
Hell is horrible beyond description. It is to exist while not existing. Hebrews 1:3 declares that Jesus is the One who enables all things to exist; he sustains all things by his great power. But to choose to reject him as the Sustainer of one's life is to choose to try to exist without having the power that enables one to exist. That is hell. It is an eternal state of existing in a state of nonexistence, for God is the foundation of all that exists and hell is a state of being apart from God, apart from the foundation of existence.
Those who choose self over God, choose something that is terrible beyond our ability to comprehend, for how can something exist and yet not exist? Hell is a terror that knows no bounds.Thank God he has provided us a way to escape this terrifying possibility through Jesus Christ!
Scripture for today: Prov. 8:35, 36
Thought for today: To choose Jesus is to choose life; all other choices lead to death.
Prayer for today: I choose you, Jesus. I choose life.
