We are to be like Jesus, interpreting spiritual truths to spiritual people. This matter of addressing spiritual people receives further attention in the 1 Cor. 2 passage. Verse 14 continues:
"The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned."
Spiritual discernment is absolutely essential in order for someone to come to know God. And as was noted earlier, the lost people of the world are not spiritually discerning. That is why so many false religions abound: People are unable to discern truth from error.
So how did you and I come to know the truth and avoid falling into the same trap of believing the lies of the devil? It certainly is not because of any innate superiority in us, for we are all the same in our human weakness.
No, it is not anything in us that has given us spiritual awareness and discernment, but something that has come from outside of us into us: the Spirit of God. That, in fact, is one of his main jobs, to bring people to Christ--and there is no other way, in fact, for a person to come to know Christ except through the working of the Holy Spirit.
"No one can say, 'Jesus is Lord,' except by the Holy Spirit" (1 Cor. 12:3).
Scripture for today: 1 Cor. 2:14
Thought for today: The Spirit of God must work in a person's heart before my words can be used by God to lead that person to Christ.
Prayer for today: Help me, Holy Spirit, to rely upon you in my witnessing for Christ, and not upon my own words.
