The audacity and arrogance of anyone thinking that he or she can instruct God in anything is difficult to understand. Nevertheless, the pride of man knows no bounds.
In reply, Scripture simply states, "For who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him?" (1 Cor. 2:16).
Who indeed? Who could possibly claim to know anything about what is in the mind of God or how he thinks or purposes anything? Nevertheless, a most remarkable statement concludes this final verse of 1 Cor. 2. Verse 16 ends with this astonishing statement:
"But we have the mind of Christ."
Apart from Christ, no one can know God. But in Christ, not only do we know God, we can know the very depths of both his mind and his heart. We become privileged to know God's desires, the very secrets of his heart, and also become endowed with his own wisdom. This is the incredible privilege of every child of God.
But what does it mean to have the mind of God? Does this mean that once we become a Christian, we suddenly understand every thing there is to know about God and reality? Hardly. But what it does mean is that we begin to see reality and our own place in it in a totally different way: We begin to see things the way God sees them. For it is in the mind and what the mind believes and how a person perceives reality that determines how a person functions in that reality. And God wants us to function as his representatives in this world -- and the next. To do this, we need the mind of Christ.
Scripture for today: 1 Cor. 2:16
Thought for today: In Christ, I have the mind of Christ, the mind of God.
Prayer for today: Lord, help me to see more and more clearly just what it means to have your mind. Help me to think and see as I should.
