Some people do not like to think of God as the vengeful God dispensing justice and punishment to those who oppose him. But the very definition or character of God demands that he do so. If there were no punishment for wickedness, there would be no justice, no real right or wrong, and existence would be meaningless.

In his vision, John saw the souls of those who were slain because of their faithful witness to the Word of God. They called out for God to avenge their deaths (Rev. 6:10).

If there were no promise by God to distribute justice in a final judgment of this world, there would be no reason, no incentive, to suffer for righteousness' sake. Soldiers are willing to risk much and suffer much for the ideals they believe in. But if they knew that all their sacrifice and hard service in battle would be set aside as meaningless, and that there really is no right or wrong, then would they still be willing to risk their lives in a meaningless war?

Those who think that God would never send anyone to hell do not understand justice; they do not understand God and absolutes and right and wrong.

"Evil men do not understand justice, but those who seek the Lord understand it fully" (Prov. 28:5).

Scripture for today: Rev. 6:9-11
Thought for today: Justice belongs to the Lord.
Prayer for today: Lord, thank you that in the midst of administering justice, you remember mercy.
