Regarding my question to God about the need for the punishment of hell to last for ever . . . Although I never received what I considered a distinct, clear answer to this question, I did sense in my spirit over time that the answer has to do with the seriousness of our existence -- something regarding which I have seen very few people consider in their lifetime.
The fact that a human soul can exist -- something apart from God who is the sum total of all that exists or can exist -- is such a deep truth of reality that rejection of the reason for that existence must, of necessity, carry with it the ultimate consequence, which is to be separated from that reality -- and not just for a time but for all time, because reality is eternal, being based, as it is, on the one eternal God.
Therefore, those who reject that reality must suffer the natural consequence of that rejection of the most basic and total essence of existence itself. And, no, they would not change their minds even if given an infinite number of chances. For Jesus said that they would not be convinced of the truth of God's revelation about reality and himself in the Bible, "even if someone rises from the dead" (Luke 16:31).
Scripture for today: Luke 16:19-31
Thought for today: Life is far more serious than most realize.
Prayer for today: Lord God, keep me mindful of the seriousness of my existence.
