Another reason why hell must last forever, which I believe the Lord revealed to me as I pondered this question over time, has to do with the adequacy of God's revelation of himself to us in this world.
Romans 1 says that creation itself is a powerful testimony to the existence of God and that those who reject that testimony will have no excuse on the day of judgment for not having believed that testimony and accepting it.
And, of course, the Word of God itself is the main means of revealing God and reality to us, with Jesus being the highest form of that revelation. Anyone who rejects all three of these testimonies from God has no excuse. God has deemed them sufficient and if the rebel still refuses to accept that judgment, then he himself will be judged by that refusal. He has set himself up as his own god, deciding what is and is not sufficient evidence to believe. That is a sin that cannot be forgiven, for in reality there is only one God, and that God cannot be the created being that is man but is the one eternal God, and to reject this eternal truth carries with it eternal consequences.
This is not a pleasant topic and I hasten to move on to brighter areas of our relationship with God. But I do feel that it is important enough that the Lord wanted it included in these devotions.
Scripture for today: Luke 16:19-31
Thought for today: Existence is eternal.
Prayer for today: Eternal God, I tremble at the thought of eternity. Thank you for making it possible for me to look forward to spending it with you who inhabits eternity.
