Scripture speaks clearly on this matter of what happens to us in our lives not necessarily being for our benefit. It could very well be for the purpose of illustrating something God wants to make known to unseen spiritual beings in another realm -- beings both good and evil. It happened to God's people of old:

"These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us" (1 Cor. 10:11).

"It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you" (1 Ptr. 1:12).

There is no reason that the same is not happening to us as well. For Scripture says that we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses (Heb. 12:1), so that through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms (Eph. 3:10).

So, then, let us not be dismayed if we should go through fiery trials for no apparent reason. For to this we have been called as well.

"Do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you" (1 Ptr. 4:12).

Scripture for today: 1 Peter 4, 5
Thought for today: When life seems to have no meaning for me, it may well have the most meaning of all.
Prayer for today: Grant me understanding, Lord, so that I find meaning in the meaningless times. And if I should not find such meaning, grant me faith in you, to trust that you have a purpose for my trial.
