God's Word searches the heart. It is the lamp of the Lord, shedding light into the darkest corners of the reader's heart. What is this Word of God looking for? Some people, including, sadly, some Christians, believe that God is always looking for some sin or weakness in their life, solely so he can punish them for it. They view God as a "meanie" who delights in judging us and taking away our fun times.

It is true, of course, that God does constantly search us for sin, but that is not because he is a mean-spirited person, but just the opposite: because he loves us and knows that sin will hurt us.

But there is another reason why the Word of God is so intent on searching our hearts as the lamp of God. It is because God is always looking for someone whose heart is similar to his, someone with whom he can share his most intimate secrets.

How happy He is, then, when he discovers such a heart that is open to his Spirit and his searchings--one who can be described in the beautiful words of Proverbs 21:1:

"The king's heart is in the hand of the Lord; he directs it like a watercourse wherever he pleases."

Does that describe your heart? Is it so open to the Spirit of God that when you read his Word, the Spirit simply flows like water, seeking its own level? Is your will so open to God's will that there is no resistance, but you float like a piece of wood on that stream of God's will?

Scripture for today: Proverbs 21:1
Thought for today: The heart God seeks is one that he can direct as easily as water flows in a stream.
Prayer for today: Lord, make my heart like a living stream of water that flows out from me to others with your living water of life.
