Whether or not we have as deep a background in sin as another person is, in a way, immaterial. We all have the potential to sin, whether we actually do it or not. Once we become aware of this truth, we enter into the same state of deep thankfulness to God for forgiving us as the person who has actually done these things which displease God. If this were not so, then in order to really love Jesus, all of us would have to strive to be the very worst we could be in order that our forgiveness could be greater and thus our love as well.

Clearly, this is not logical or in accord with God's ways. God's plan for us is one of holiness, not sin. That is one of the reasons He gave us the law or 10 commandments: to make us aware of our sin:

"I would not have known what sin was except through the law" (Rom. 7:7).

That is the true purpose of the law, to make us aware of our sin, not to serve as the goal to be reached, because it is impossible for us to reach that goal. That would be legalism, not grace. The law was given to make us aware that we cannot obey it perfectly, to show us our need of a Savior.

Scripture for today: Romans 7:18
Thought for today: I know the true nature of myself because God's Word has revealed this to me.
Prayer for today: Lord, I ask you to continue to reveal myself to me. Let me know both that I am a sinner and also that I am a redeemed sinner through faith in Jesus Christ.
