In Matthew, Jesus' genealogy is traced back only as far as his human ancestor Abraham. But in Luke, chapter three, the genealogy of Jesus is traced even farther back than is done in Matthew--all the way to the very first human being, Adam (v. 38).
In these two examples from Scripture, we learn that every human being, including you and me, is part of a bigger plan and reality than our self-centered human nature inclines us to take.
But is even this all? Is tracing our origin back to the first human being ever to exist all that we need do to have a proper perspective on our own existence? Clearly not, for a most remarkable addition is given in that last verse of Luke three. For verse 38 does not end with a reference to Adam, our human ancestor, but it goes on to say that Adam was the son "of God."
There are levels of awareness regarding who we are and why we are here. The sinful human being naturally focuses on self--a severely restricted worldview. However, one who has been born again has a wider vision of his or her own existence. Not only can this person trace his or her existence back to the very first person who walked this planet, but even farther back than that: all the way back to the eternal God.
A person's origin determines his destiny. If, as evolutionists say, we come from animals, then that is how we will live and die--as animals. But God's Word says that we come from him and are made in his image. Therefore, our destiny, in Christ, matches our origin--and his. Origin determines destiny.
There are dramatic and amazing consequences of this truth. Every day, we should see more and more of those consequences. What particular aspect of your origin and destiny in God are you aware of right now?
Scripture for today: Ephesians 1:1-14
Thought for today: My existence has been planned by God from all eternity.
Prayer for today: Almighty God, I address you in this way, as the almighty God, because I am overwhelmed by your power--and your love. I am awed that you did indeed plan to create me from all eternity. I thank you so much for loving me enough to do this. Thank you, Lord. Amen.
