Adam and Eve were not the first to suffer the consequences of trying to alter reality to their own, selfish, logically impossible desires. Before the total, absolute, unchanging nature of reality was thus demonstrated to the first two human beings on earth, a like demonstration took place in heaven itself, according to the Bible.
Scripture says that there was a spiritual being called Lucifer who, like Adam and Eve, was in perfect spiritual harmony with the ultimate reality of God and his heavenly abode. In harmony, that is, until this created being decided that the reality into which his Creator had placed him was not enough. He wanted more. Much more. He wanted to take the place of his own Creator.
We have seen how this is a logical impossibility. This being was not using the logical capabilities which his Master had given him. He was not thinking -- or else he would not have done what he did: rebel against reality.
Scripture says that Lucifer wanted to be like God, to be God. So he rebelled against God, the ultimate, unmovable reality -- and he was pushed far away from that ultimate reality.
So we have two dramatic and sobering illustrations from God's Word of what happens when we choose any reality other than his. And just as in these two cases, if we choose as they did, we shall suffer as they did. Those who choose realities other than that of God lose the reality of God.
Scripture for today: Isaiah 14:12-20
Thought for today: Choices have consequences.
Prayer for today: Lord, help me to choose wisely. I choose you.
