When Elihu spoke to Job in his suffering, he pointed out to Job this truth about there being two ways God speaks to his children. One is an easy way, that of simply hearing him speak and obeying it, and the other is a harder way, having to go through a measure of discipline.
"For God does speak -- now one way, now another--though man may not perceive it" (Job 33:14).
That is the real key, perceiving God's voice, not the actual method that is used. For many people receive instruction and warning from God, whether from his Word or through circumstances, sometimes trying ones. But if they do not perceive God speaking to them through either method, then what good is it?
God does none of these things simply to show his sovereignty over men. He does these things to save those who do not know what they need to know, so that the light of life may shine on them (v. 30). And he does these things not just once repeatedly, until the message gets through (v. 30).
Is his message getting through to you? Or do you need a bit put into your mouth?
Scripture for today: Job 33; Psalm 32:8, 9
Thought for today: Bits are for animals. People are made for the Word of God to guide them.
Prayer for today: Guide me, Lord, by your Word.
