2 Thessalonians 1:9 contains one of the most chilling statements in the Bible, and it concerns the eternal separation of the unholy from that which is holy. Yet, as is so often the case, God's Word makes this tremendously serious proclamation in words that are simply stated -- so simply stated that it is easy to overlook the seriousness of their import.

Speaking of those who do not know God, as verse 8 describes them, verse 9 says that "they will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out form the presence of the Lord and from the majesty of his power."

This is the ultimate separation for two reasons. One, because it is separation from God, who is the ultimate of all reality. And two, because this separation is eternal. It is final, unable to be changed or altered in any way for all eternity. Such finality and severity is difficult for the human mind to grasp, yet we should contemplate it often as one way to keep our paths straight before the Lord.

This passage goes on, in verse 10, to mention once again the matter of holiness. It says that on that when Jesus comes again in glory, that glory will be seen in "his holy people."

Holiness in our lives is not an optional matter that we can take lightly. God expects to see the holiness of his Son displayed in our everyday lives. We are his witnesses of the truth of God's holiness to this world.

Scripture for today: 2 Thess. 1:9, 10
Thought for today: Holiness determines separation.
Prayer for today: Help me to be separated and holy unto you, Lord.
