There are many reasons why those who lose all they enjoyed in life do so at their death. One such reason is through lack of understanding. They do not understand that their life is not their own to live as they please, but that they were created by God to live for his pleasure. They lack wisdom and understanding which he is willing to give to them if they would humble themselves. But because they refuse to do this, at their death their whole life will come down around them in ruins -- and all because they refused to see and understand.

"A people without understanding shall come to ruin" (Hosea 4:14).

They die without wisdom (Job 4:21).

God's Word makes it plain that those who have no vision beyond this life will never see the greater life for which they were created.

"Where there is no vision, the people perish" (Prov. 29:18).

How foolish for people to be so concerned about all the many things of this life and pay no attention to that which will come. Such short-sighted vision comes at a terrible price.

"She took no thought of her doom, therefore her fall is terrible" (Lam. 1:9).

How much better to think about life and death and heaven and hell and eternity now, and see its reality through God's Word, instead of paying attention only to things of this life and paying for this lack of vision with that life.

Scripture for today: Hosea 4:14; Job 4:21; Prov. 29:18; Lam. 1:9
Thought for today: It is wise to think about death while still alive.
Prayer for today: Save me, Lord, from shortsightedness.
