We cannot escape reality by drugs, death, or any other means; to do so would be a contradiction in terms, for reality is, by definition, that which cannot be escaped but rather encompasses all -- both those who see it rightly and those who either have a false vision of it or refuse to accept it at all.

Alcohol and the myriad other drugs people take either to alter their reality or to try to escape from it are all a deception. None of them actually changes reality. All they do is change the user's perception of reality. It is like the little child who is afraid and pulls the sheet on the bed over his eyes to make the frightening reality go away. Does the reality disappear? Of course not. All that changes is that he becomes blind to what is facing him.

I have seen young people on drugs. I remember one whose eyes were glazed over, as though a film had descended over his eyes. He had become blind to reality and was at that moment living in a fantasy world, a world of his own mind and perceptions -- all of which were false. He had to have a friend lead him around.

Jesus once said that there are people who are spiritually blind and have others just as blind lead them around. He then said bluntly to leave them (Mt. 15:14), for they will both fall into the ditch.

Whether it is falling into a ditch or jumping off a bridge, spiritual blindness due to a false perspective of reality (God) leads to serious, even fatal, consequences. Let us always have a true and proper perspective by reading God's Word.

Scripture for today: Psalm 119:105
Thought for today: God's Word gives us true perspective on God and reality.
Prayer for today: Let me see, Lord, with proper perspective. Grant me right perceptions and conceptions of who you are and my place in your reality.
