If we want to have a true perspective on reality then we need to begin at the beginning. If we ask why things are the way they are, we quickly arrive at a more basic question, one on which all else rests.
Reality is a huge subject and extremely complex, covering as it does everything that exists. How in the world are we to make sense of such a vast, profound subject? Where do we begin? We do not want to get bogged down in philosophical terms and be overwhelmed by the magnitude of what is before us. Reality is everything there is, and we want to put that all-encompassing reality into proper and correct perspective. How does one begin talking about everything?
One astute person has answered that question for us by saying, "The first question that rightly should be asked is, 'Why is there something rather than nothing?'"
The person who said that is a philosopher, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz -- although others have voiced the same question down through the ages. It is very interesting that Leibniz was also a mathematician, the science most firmly grounded in reality and least affected by our limited ability to explore the physical world.
So when such a person says that this is the most basic question of all (yes, even more fundamental than, "Is there a God?"), we should take notice and pay attention. When we answer this question, we will know that there is a God.
Scripture for today: Genesis 1:1
Thought for today: All that begins to exist must have a cause.
Prayer for today: Lord, you are the only thing in existence that has no cause, for you did not begin to exist and therefore do not need to have a cause for beginning to exist. I worship you for your eternal nature.
