The story is told of a college science professor who gave a lecture on the enormous complexity and sheer size of the universe. When the lecture was over, he opened it up for questions. One student asked why stars were able to give off light. The professor went into a detailed description of nuclear processes responsible for this.

Then the hand went up again. But why did these nuclear processes give off such huge amounts of energy? Another long, detailed explanation followed. The hand went up again, questioning why those processes given as explanation for the higher processes were able to release such energy.

On and on the questions and answers went, each time reaching farther and farther down into microscopic, unseen realms of matter and energy.

Finally, like a little child who continually asks the same question of "Why?" over and over again, no matter how hard we try to explain the last question, the hand went up one last time, and by now the question itself had also been reduced down to that simplest, most basic question of all: Why?

By this time the professor realized that no real answer involving solely physical processes would be adequate to explain the tremendous complexity of all that exists, so when the student asked one last time, the professor paused, thinking how to reply honestly yet adequately. To the final question of Why? came this final answer: "Because God wants it that way. That's why."

And with that, the questions ceased.

Scripture for today: Rev. 4:11
Thought for today: The will of God and his pleasure is the basis for all that exists.
Prayer for today: Lord, I thank you for creating me, for taking pleasure in me.
