Isaiah 28 is one instance where it is recorded that God had to deal with the people for mocking him. There are others.

When Jesus hung upon the cross, in agony in body and spirit, in the midst of offering himself up as the sacrifice for our sins -- right then, in the very midst of the most intense part of his suffering -- those around him mocked him.

What a picture this gives us of the degradation and the depths of evil that our world has fallen into due to sin. At the very moment when God shows his great love and compassion for a lost world -- at that very moment -- the world so totally does not see the great love of God that it even mocks what he is doing for it at the very moment of mocking.

Matthew 27:39-44 records that the crowd threw insults up at Jesus, daring him to come down from the cross and thus prove that he was God, as he claimed to be. Thus the world mocks God even as he gives himself up to death to save this mocking world. How sad and tragic that a lost mankind does not even recognize its salvation.

But though it mocks, God completes his work, though it seem alien to a blind and lost and mocking world.

Scripture for today: Matthew 27:39-44
Thought for today: God's love overcomes the mocking of the world.
Prayer for today: Lord, may I never fear being mocked before the world, but always remember the tremendous blessing that your love produces in the midst of mocking.
