Life is very precious. No one in his or her right mind would choose to give up life and go to hell. No, we want to live life and live it to the fullest. The so-called extreme sports are an example that illustrates this fact. Extreme sports include any sports activity that is carried out in an extreme manner: jumping off cliffs with bungee cords or parachutes, diving in the ocean to as great a depth as possible without breathing apparatus, and so forth.
Such activities are dramatic illustrations of the truth that human beings crave life to its fullest. We want to live fully before we die. And so we seek to participate in life with an intensity and passion, because we know that we have but one opportunity to do so.
But no matter how intense our passion for all our activities in which we participate in life, Scripture says that it makes no difference. If we do not have God as the center of this passion for life, in the end, we will lose it all; everything will disappear at death: all our passion, all our intensity, whether it be good or bad. For the person outside of Christ:
"Their love, their hate and their jealousy have long since vanished; never again will they have a part in anything that goes on under the sun" (Eccl 9:6).
Passion in life cannot guarantee eternal possession of life. Only Jesus is life eternal.
Scripture for today: Eccl. 9:6
Thought for today: Jesus must be my passion in life if I am to have life -- and keep it.
Prayer for today: Thank you, Jesus, for enabling me to keep the life I have in you for ever.
