In John's vision of Revelation 12, verse 16 says that the woman who represents the church in the vision found help from the flood that threatened her life. It says there that the earth helped her by opening its mouth and swallowing the river that the dragon had spewed out of its mouth.

Whatever the final application of this verse from Scripture may be, we have already seen one instance of this in our own day. On January 17, 1994, a powerful 6.8 magnitude earthquake shook the Los Angeles area. The quake was centered in Northridge, a center for pornography that produces a huge amount of this filth.

A survey after the earthquake revealed that every pornography maker in the area had been damaged. Some reports stated that those involved in this ignoble business knew without a doubt in their mind that this was God's judgment upon them, and they were frightened by it--as well they should be.

Is this an example of what the vision of Revelation 12 means? It remains to be seen, but certainly God's wrath and judgment must fall on all who allow themselves to be dirty vessels fit only for such judgment. An earthquake is only one way in which this truth of Scripture might be fulfilled, but it is a dramatic way that even the wicked can understand, when they see the ground literally open up and swallow the means to produce the filth of words and images that come from such vessels of uncleanness.

Scripture for today: 2 Timothy 2:20, 21; Rev. 12:13-15
Thought for today: It is powerful irony when God uses the earth to be the means of judging an earth that flaunts his holy laws.
Prayer for today: Holy God, protect me from the assault of the dragon, the evil one, when he tries to swallow me using words that are not in accord with your Word.
