Ezekiel prophesied the Word of God to dry bones and they came back together, once again united into the body skeleton. But it was only a skeleton. A skeleton is just the framework. The next step is to surround that skeleton with a body.

"I looked and tendons and flesh appeared on them and skin covered them" (Ezek. 37:8)

But does flesh and skin alone make a body? If the skeleton is the first step, the framework for the body, and the body is the second, then is this fleshing out of the skeletal framework all that all that is needed? Is that the final step?

No. We know that a third and final aspect is necessary for life to be, for verse 8 continues on and says that there is something missing, even after all God has done to bring back the dead, dry bones to life. Verse 8 pinpoints the missing ingredient for life: " . . . but there was no breath in them."

We can say that we believe in Jesus, go to church, read the Bible, and do all the other things normally expected of a believer in Christ, but if there is no breath of God in the believer's life, then there is no life at all.

The breath of God is the Spirit of God, and unless the Holy Spirit is active in the believer's life, that life is not life but a pretense of life. If we would know the life of Christ in our lives, we must give the Holy Spirit access to that life.

Scripture for today: Ezekiel 37:1-7
Thought for today: The Holy Spirit is the key ingredient that makes me alive in Christ.
Prayer for today: Holy Spirit, make me alive in Christ. Give new life to my dead, spiritual bones and make me live -- in Christ.
