The description of the army of God that Joel gives is thrilling and exciting. It is clearly a powerful army that cannot be stopped. He says that it plunges through defenses without breaking ranks. It is so powerful that the earth shakes before them and the sky trembles, the sun and moon are darkened, and the stars no longer shine (Joel 2:8-10).
Similar descriptions describing events happening in the end times are found in Revelation (8 and 9).
These frightening pictures remind us that believing in Jesus or not believing in him is not just a casual decision one may lightly ignore and pass by in life. On this one, fateful decision hang events and consequences that will literally shake the earth, including that small part of it of which each human being's body is made. All of heaven and earth will be in throes of agony or delight over that one decision. Whole armies will go into battle to influence that decision. Only those who have fortified themselves with the Word of God and the Spirit of God will be able to stand up under the pressure of these armies.
Scripture for today: Revelation 8, 9
Thought for today: Mighty armies do battle over each human soul.
Prayer for today: Lord God, protect my soul. I look to you, Jesus, to enable me to withstand all attacks by the enemy on that soul. Thank you for doing this.
