1 Corinthians 7:31 says that the form of this world is passing away. What does that mean? What is the form of this world? It is all the structures that govern this world and our daily lives. It includes governments, economies, religions, cultures -- all those things that govern what we do in our daily lives.
Scripture says that all these things are passing away. Why? Because they are making way for a new world in which Christ is King and he rules. There will be no need for manmade governments because the government will rest upon his shoulders (Is. 9:6) and of that government there will be no end (v. 7). The present form of government will end and the rule of the Lord Jesus Christ will replace it. One must end so that the other can commence.
What happens on the outside, visible world that all can see must also happen on the inside, in the human heart, where none but the new Ruler can see. Jesus must replace whatever we have set upon the throne of our heart as our ruler, and that ruler is self. Self must step down so that the new Ruler of heaven and earth can reign in our hearts as well as in the world. In fact, there would be no one to reign over unless this is done. For God does not want to reign over those who do not want him as their Lord and Master. Therefore, in putting aside my self as the lord of my life and allowing Jesus to take over the throne of my heart, I help prepare the world for his return.
Scripture for today: 2 Peter 3:11-13
Thought for today: Jesus will reign over this world one heart at a time.
Prayer for today: What a privilege, Lord, to have you reign over my heart as a first fruit in preparation for your coming reign over the whole world.
